Biography of Henry Fayol

Henry Fayol was a theorist and researcher, who was born in Istanbul on July 29, 1841 into a bourgeois family, after a year of the culmination of the Industrial Revolution, so he had to live the consequences of this event.

In relation to his academic life, this researcher obtained his professional title in 1860, graduating as a civil mining engineer at 19 years of age. Upon completing his studies, he began to work directly at the Commentry Fourchambault Stock Company, a large mining and metallurgical company and it was where he worked his entire life.

With the passage of time, this engineer gradually rose within the company and when he turned 25, he obtained the position of manager of mines. After 22 years of work, the company appointed him CEO and he remained in that managerial position 30 years until he retired in 1918, leaving his successor in the company under optimal conditions and stable.

During his tenure as CEO, he made several changes that helped improve the labor system in the mines, Some of those changes were job transformation and the coordination of employees to work in team.

Fayol died at 84 years old and left two important works in writing, the most important was published in 1916, which he called Industrial and General Administration and in 1921, he wrote the book The Industrial Incapacity of the State and the Awakening of the Public Spirit.

• These ideas are intended to optimize the arrangement and shape of the bodies that make up the departments of the company and their structural interrelation.

• In this sense, Taylor carried out investigations related to the development of the factory, while Fayol was in charge of investigating the business directions. He also created the School of Chiefs and contributed effective ideas related to the various administrative levels that are developed internally in the company.

Beyond the fundamental aspects of Fayolism, Fayol through this administrative model highlights a large number of important functions that every industrial company must take into account, these functions are the following:

• Business functions: These are the functions related to efficient production and business buying or selling.
• Security features: These functions focus on the protection of people's assets in the event of problems, slides or accidents within the company.
• Technical functions: They are responsible for fulfilling the function of providing specific goods and services that are necessary within the company.
• Accounting functions: They are those that are directly related to balances, statistics, inventories and costs, among others.
• Financial functions: These functions are directly related to everything that has to do with the economic process and with the process of this management so that it can have a higher performance.
• Administrative functions: These functions are the main object of the study proposed by Fayol within his model of Fayolismo, which indicates the synchronization and coordination of all the functions that have been mentioned.

Henry Fayol developed administrative scientific management as an independent theory and of contemporary form, which led him to be the most widely recognized founder of the modern method of management.
