Protective factors of suicidal behavior

Suicide is an increasingly widespread problem in all societies, this leads to serious dysfunctions within the family of the suicide and in all its surroundings, losing a loved one is not something easily digestible, and less if it has happened unexpectedly and by suicide. Therefore, in this PsicologíaOnline article, we proceed to show you a series of Protective factors of suicidal behavior.

To these factors should be added the ability to make use of sources that provide mental healthsuch as counseling, psychology or psychiatry consultations, crisis intervention units, emergency medical services, family physicians, volunteer suicide prevention agencies, etc. Adolescents should be educated in the use of existing mental health sources in the community, when to use them, what benefits can be obtained, what services or therapeutic possibilities can be provided and thereby favor a rational use of the themselves.

In this aspect itself, a systematic effort must begin to educate adolescents in tolerance towards the mentally ill and acceptance of the mental illness as a type of disorder similar to other chronic non-communicable conditions, avoiding stigmatization and rejecting attitudes towards those suffer from them, which will increase the future probabilities of accepting them in case of suffering them and seeking help to receive specialized treatment, decreasing the chances of committing suicide if you consider that having a mental illness is a proven risk factor for suicide, and if it is not treated, even worse.

It can contribute to modify pejorative attitudes towards the mentally ill avoiding using qualifiers such as 'abnormal', 'morons', 'crazy', and modifying the interpretations of the emotional suffering by considering it as a 'cowardice', 'a disability', 'a softness' and other qualifications what inhibit chances of seeking support in those who suffer them.
