Where does low self-esteem come from?

Many people suffer from low self-esteem, something that influences all areas of their life, which leads them to not valuing themselves, to see themselves as people who have no value in themselves and who have no right to desire and demand anything, not consider themselves worthy of the love or respect of others and not allow themselves to fight for their dreams and Rights.

This low self-esteem is not due to a carambola of fate, but rather has its origin in the experiences of the person, especially in the first years of his life, age at which the personality and self-concept of oneself is formed.

What are the facts that lead us to have low self-esteem? Here we list them:

  • Excessive criticism by parents or educators: If a child grows up hearing that he is not good, that he is not intelligent, hard-working, educated, respectful..., the child will end up integrating these criticisms as truths and you will suffer a loss of self-confidence in your abilities that will lead you to not feel valid and to never try to achieve something out of fear of failure.
  • Dysfunctional parents: If the parents project their frustrations on the child, they force him to fulfill his expectations, even if he is unconscious. Faced with the impossibility of fulfilling them, the child will see himself as an invalid person, without the right to be loved, a feeling that will accompany him in adult life.

The same will happen if he has parents who do not take care of him physically or emotionally, if he suffers abuse or abuse, physical, mental or sexual on the part of his parents or adults in charge of whom he is. This situation will lead them to find great difficulties to trust others and relate to them.
